The Rise And Fall Of The Sideshow Geek
by Nathan Wakefield, Foreword by James Taylor
(2023, Outside Talker Press, in partnership with Shocked and Amazed! Imprints)
It was one of the darkest spectacles in carnival history—an act so grotesque and steeped in controversy that it has all but vanished. This was the geek act. At its peak, it was disturbingly common, yet its story remains murky. Sensationalized retellings and spotty documentation have blurred fact and fiction, leaving us with more myth than memory.
This book sets out to cut through the haze. It offers a clear-eyed, unflinching history of the sideshow geek—placing it in context with other strange and bygone entertainments: wild men, stone eaters, human ostriches, competitive goldfish swallowers, and more. Together, these chapters trace the rise, notoriety, and eventual collapse of one of the most infamous acts ever to step under the carnival lights.

Rose’s Royal Midgets and Other Little People of Vaudeville Hardcover
by Trav S.D., Foreword by James Taylor
(2021, Vaudevisuals Press)
The name Rose’s Royal Midgets held an important place at theatres, circuses and fairgrounds across three continents a century ago, even if each component of the troupe’s name crumbles into dust by light of day (“Rose” was a pseudonym”, the company held no Royal patent, and the word “midget” has passed out of use in polite society). This large touring production of Little People was the creation of one of show biz history’s great impresarios, Ike Rose, now forgotten but once in a league with names like Barnum and Ziegfeld as men who delivered full value for the price of a ticket. Peruse these pages for a glimpse into a vanished world, one as cynical as it was magical, but one that was also always fascinating.
